Why are ants considered pests?

Ants are considered pests as they can easily contaminate foods whilst foraging for the colony. The black garden ant is the most common species found to invade homes and businesses. If an ant finds a suitable food source, it will alert the other ‘worker ants’ from the colony. This will result in large numbers of ants appearing over a short period of time.

A company or organisation’s reputation can be tarnished by a highly publicised ant problem.

Are there any signs I have an ant infestation?

Over the course of only a few days, during the height of Summer (usually between July and August) you may notice flying ants in your garden or home. These ants are the reproductive male and female’s. Mating occurs during flight and the female will then search out a nesting site, ready to begin a new colony.

Ants will alert other worker ants from the colony when a suitable food source has been found. If you encounter a trail of ants within your property, you’ll almost certainly be able to follow them to the food source.
